Exploration Badge
The aim of this badge is to introduce the girls to exploring the outdoor world and participating in outdoor activities
(Please check that all safety/insurance procedures have been adhered to.)
Junior Candidates
- Go for a walk in one of the following:
- The country
- A forest park
- Along the beach
- The local park
- Collect items of interest during your walk but do not pick wild flowers
- Visit one of the following:
- Farm
- Zoo
Candidates
- Go for a walk in one of the following:
- The country
- A forest park
- Along the beach
- The local park

- Zoo
- Historic site
- Take part in an organised event, e.g. Ecotrail, basic orienteering, scavenger hunt.
Junior Members
7-9 years complete 1 and three others
9-11 years complete all
- Go for a 2-3km walk in one of the following:
- The country
- A forest park
- Along the beach
- The local park
Study your surroundings and prepare a report. You may collect items during your walk to help with your report. (Be aware of local restrictions regarding removal of materials)
- Visit one of the following:
- Farm
- Zoo
- Historic Site
- Outdoor education centre
- Water sports centre
- Produce a group report on your activities for whichever centre you visited in No. 2. It may be a collage or a frieze.
- Learn how to use a compass and show how to find north.
- Take part in an organised event, e.g. Ecotrail, basic orienteering, scavenger hunt.

- Know the country code
- Know the safety code and expedition first aid
- Know how to read and use a map in order to participate in an orienteering event.
- Learn how to use a compass and find north.
- Complete a walk of not less than 8km. This should have a definite purpose, e.g. visit a place of interest
- Produce a record of your journey. You may use a diary, photos, wall display, scrapbook etc. the record must have a written content of not less than 200 words.
- Cook a meal outdoors and be aware of the dangers of fires, stoves, bonfires and BBQs.
- Have spent at least three days at camp or at least one night under canvas in an organised camp.
- Know what equipment, clothing, footwear and supplies necessary for any activity you might undertake.
