Prayer for Flood Victims – A Message from GFS World President

Dear friends,

You may have recently heard reports about severe storms and flooding that have caused loss of life, damage to homes and suffering in many parts of the world. Some of the affected areas include NSW in Australia, Mumbai in India, Missouri and Kentucky in the USA, Nigeria, southern Germany, Colombo in Sri Lanka and various regions across Africa.

Thembeka Pama has just informed that 57 lives have been lost in the Diocese of Mthatha, in South Africa. Fortunately, all GBFS members are currently reported safe, though search and rescue efforts are ongoing as divers continue to look for missing persons.

It is distressing to see how human-induced climate change and global warming are increasing the extreme weather patterns. Floods are often triggered by deforestation, sand mining, inadequate drainage systems and poor waste management.

Beyond the destruction of homes and livelihoods, floodwaters contaminated with sewage, bacteria and chemicals pose serious health risks. Injuries can be caused by metal and glass objects hidden in the floodwater.

Let us take a moment to remember all those affected by recent cyclones, tornadoes, landslides, heavy rains and floods in various parts of the world. We pray for those who have lost their lives and loved ones, people who have had to endure the destruction of their homes and property, farmers and others who have lost their crops and livestock, those suffering from floodwater-borne illnesses and many who are living in fear.

May God protect and comfort all who suffer, and may we be moved to offer support and compassion in any way we can.

May God bless the efforts of rescue workers, volunteers, and aid organisations working to bring relief.

O Lord, give us wisdom to care for the environment, reduce pollution and prevent the destruction that leads to floods and devastation.

*At this time, we also pray for the families of those who lost their lives in the horrific plane crash in Ahmedabad, India.

Jeanne Withanage

GFS World President
